Turtle Days Festival will offer new events and old favorites

CHURUBUSCO, Ind. – Starting next week, don’t be surprised to see Oscar the Turtle reading his favorite Dr. Seuss book at the local library, or eating fries at a nearby restaurant or dancing a jig on The Point as he celebrates the 60th anniversary of his debut as the Beast of Busco.

If you spot Oscar, take a photo of the reptile – with you or with family members – and send it in to us at editor@buscovoice.com. Buscovoice.com will publish them in the Turtle Days section.

While Oscar works on the publicity angle, the Turtle Days Festival Committee are getting down to business and meeting every two weeks to discuss plans for the 60th celebration of The Hunt for Oscar and the Turtle Days Festival.

On the agenda for this year’s festival – some old favorites and some new additions sure to please everyone.

A grand finale fireworks display on the last day of the festival – Saturday, June 20 – will ensure Turtle Days goes out with a bang!td-09-1

Thee first Turtle Days event will begin Tuesday, June 17, with a horseshoe and cornhole tournament. The Midway and carnival will be open Wednesday through Saturday in the park, along with many food and vendor concessions and booths. The entertainment tent will host events like the Talent Show, Little Mr. and Miss Contest, live bands, karaoke contests and more.

The Churubusco Quilting Club will host a quilt show at a local church and raffle off a special Turtle Days commemorative 60th anniversary quilt.

Some of the returning events include the Kids Day in the Park, Turtle Races, Chicken BBQ, Fire Department Fish & Tenderloin dinner, Churubusco Public Library Friday night concert, bingo in the park, live entertainment in the park and in the Downtown Beer Tent, 5K run, barbecue cook-off, car show and parade.

And at the Commerce Center (adjacent to Farmer’s & Merchants Bank) it will be the second year for the popular tractor and pony pulls while next door, at the Churubusco Conservation Club, the Turtle Days trap shoot will offer some excitement – and prizes! – for shooting sports enthusiasts.
