The Churubusco Track team is finishing up an outstanding season.
“We look to peak for Sectionals, and we have a bunch of (athletes) hitting their best marks ever,” said Coach Zach Dock.
Thirteen members of both the girls’ and boys’ Churubusco track team will compete or serve as alternates at the Track & Field Regionals this week.
Athletes who will represent Churubusco at the Regional Track & Field competition include Karsten Lehner, Alex Zolman, Zach Armstead, Jordan Hamilton, Travis Knapp, Jeremy Forker, Michael Hall, Brian Trump, Tiffany LeFever, Brooke Shearer, Heather Monk, Peyton Summers and Rachel Fehring. Alex Zolman will serve as alternate.
“It’s sad at the end of the season to let half of the team go,” Dock said, “but we have performed very well. I am very pleased.”
The boys team finished in last place at the sectional in 2008, Dock said, but improved to sixth place this year. “There has been major improvement since last year,” he said.
“As long as they all do the best they can, it’s the sign of a good season.”
This is the second consecutive year the track team has won the Busco Invitational. They also scored the most points in the history of the Central Noble Invitational.
The team was named NECC conference season champion with a record of 9-1, as well as the top winner of the NECC championship meet.At the Sectionals held last week in Marion, pole vaulter Zach Armstead and discus thrower Karsten Lehner finished strong, with Lehner throwing 14 feet better than his previous record.
At the Regionals, Brian Trump, Travis Knapp, Jeremy Forker and Michael Hall qualified in the 4 x 400 and bettered their time by 3 1/2 seconds. Hamilton also qualified for Sectionals in the hurdler 300 event.
Trump qualified in the 100 meter dash and Mike Hall in the 200 and 400 meter. Hall broke his own school record with a finishing time of 22.71 in the 400 meter dash.
Dylan Geiger broke his own personal best record by 12 seconds in the 3200 meter race.
The team members and coaches invite the community to attend the Regional competitions this week and help support the Eagles.
