Turtle Days draws plenty of Thumbs Up and a few Thumbs Down

THUMBS UP!

bv_thumbs_upTo the members of the Turtle Days Festival Committee! What a tremendous festival! We know you all worked hard to pull off such an event. The fireworks at the end were SPECTACULAR!

THUMBS DOWN!

bv_thumbsdownTo the Regional and District managers of Dollar General Store, or whoever the Dollar Generals are who establish rules against community involvement. (Not the local staff and/or clerks who are just repeating what they are instructed to repeat, and seem to be embarrassed by this ridiculous rule.) This store was the ONLY business in Churubusco who would not put Turtle Days brochures on the counter or a poster in the window. Family Dollar is also a franchise and they had no trouble doing so. The Bargain House – a local dollar store – not only helped with publicity, but is a frequent sponsor and donates many times over to community events. In the spirit of your “non-community involvement policy”, we will not be shopping at your store.

THUMBS UP!

bv_thumbs_upTo Dick and Sarah Conrow and National City Bank donating the needed $8,000 for the grand finale fireworks for the Turtle Days Festival! What a show! We owe it all to you.

Many, many thanks.

THUMBS DOWN!

To the Burton Bros. Amusements co-owner and three workers who decided to take the law into their own hands early Thursday morning in Fort Wayne and threw the only dark cloud over the 60th celebration of Oscar Turtle Days 2009 Festival.

THUMBS UP!

bv_thumbs_upTo the performers of Sunday’s “Celebrate Contemporary Broadway” at the United Methodist Church. Who knew we had so many talented people in Churubusco? Everyone was fantastic! Greg, will you sing at our funeral?

-A tonedeaf couple

THUMBS UP!

bv_thumbs_upTo Vince Simmers and others who re-organized the Turtle races this year! The set-up was great , the sound system was very audible and it did not take so long to register.

-Dad of winning turtle racer

THUMBS UP!

bv_thumbs_upTo Stacey Bonar. Sarah Tomlinson, and Rhnea and Daymon Schinbeckler for jumping in and helping at the Turtle Races Saturday when they noticed how short-handed we were. We really appreciated it! You guys did great – especially in that searing heat. Will we see you next year?

-Turtle race officials – Brad Stresemann, Danielle Simmers, Viv Sade and Vince Simmers

THUMBS DOWN!

To the woman who repeatedly used the restroom in the Boy Scout building, because she “would never use a port-a-potty” nor will she “pay a dollar to see Crunch.” She knew what she was doing – she saw the giant turtle exhibit for free when she took the opportunity to use the bathroom three times in a few hours. She also wanted a free T-shirt when they were being sold for $10 each. Nice influence on the two teenagers who were with you. Will they grow up to be takers, as well?

-Crunch Cashier and Assistant

THUMBS UP!

bv_thumbs_upTo the people responsible for the fantastic display of fireworks Saturday night at the Turtle Days Festival – one of the best displays I’ve ever seen. They were incredible! Will you do this next year? We certainly hope so.

  1. Nancy Duggan says:

In regards to certain businesses not displaying Turtle Days brochures and posters, there were probably many small businesses in Churubusco that were not even approached to display brochures or posters in their businesses for Turtle Days, mine being one of them, even though my business made donations to the event. Being a member of the Churubusco Chamber of Commerce, I would think I am a Churubusco business owner. Please be more considerate when speaking of community involvement and expressing negativity towards local businesses,as many of them are just “overlooked” or simply not deemed important enough to be included. Shopping “locally” is the best way to support this town and this community if we truly intend to survive.
