CHURUBUSCO, Ind. (Nov. 5, 2009) – The American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana is offering free family caregiver training classes for residents of Whitley County. Take advantage of this opportunity (a $45 value), which is made possible through the generosity of the Whitley County Community Foundation.

The first class, called “Positioning and Helping Your Loved One Move,” will be held Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 6-7 p.m. at the Churubusco Public Library, 116 N. Mulberry St.

After completing the 1-hour module, participants should better understand and be able to apply the principles of good body mechanics; understand the importance of repositioning a loved one who spends a lot of time in bed; recognize how to prevent pressure ulcers; and understand how to safely help their loved one move.

It’s not just for the elderly – the module can be used for people of all ages.

All participants will receive a free Family Caregiving Reference Guide and DVD set. This guide is ideal for learning necessary family caregiving skills, and was awarded the 2008 Caregiver Friendly award.

There is no charge, but pre-registration is required for this special class.

According to Lauren Stoffel, Community Preparedness Associate for the American Red Cross, a similar module will be held in the near future at the Churubusco United Methodist Church. Other classes to be offered in 2010 include:red-cross-logo
