PENDLETON, Ind. (Nov. 15, 2009) – A semi tandem trailer rig lost its rear axle on I-69 today just north of the Pendleton exit at approximately 11:45 a.m. The accident backed up traffic for miles, and the northbound bound lanes were closed so crews could clean up the site.
A vehicle attempting to avoid the wheels of the rig – which had rolled directly into oncoming traffic – crashed, causing a chain reaction involving four vehicles, including an SUV that was forced into the median.
Four people were transported to the hospital, but none of the injuries were thought to be serious.
The northbound lanes were reopened about six hours later.
Motorists waited nearly an hour in the traffic tie-up, many of them standing outside their vehicles and visiting with each other to pass the time.
