My Two Cents Worth:
Is it too late to explore the benefits of staggered town council terms? Are there even enough legit citizens out there to warrant the hassle of changing to something like a 2, 3 and 4-year term length?
I am a bit concerned that when some, if any, of the current town council move on the replacements may have a very long learning curve
Couple that with the challenges and add in human error – which we see in our age of way too much being considered to handle it well – and that equals higher negatives.
Thanks for your service rendered, considering various viewpoints and may we all begin now to encourage capable public servant candidates who can continue moving the town toward the most positiveness possible just in case any of the current trio feel called to something else.
Appreciatively,
Ms. C. of Churubusco
(Editor’s note: The three offices of the Churubusco Town Council, as well as the clerk-treasurer position will expire in December 2012. Indeed, Ms. C is right. It is entirely possible that four new office holders could be elected at the same time. For that reason, different councils have, in the past, investigated the possibility of staggering the terms so that there would always be at least one council member on board with some experience under his/her belt. It would call for one member to agree to serve an extra year and for another to serve only three of the four-year term, if my memory serves me correctly. To date, no action has been taken on this situation.)
As a side note, my first headline read: ‘Should we explore the benefits of staggering town officials?’ … which is an entirely different investigation.

It is never too late to explore a good idea and this is definitely one.I can tell you from first hand experience that there is a huge learning curve to being a responsible and effective council member. I too have wondered what may happen if all new members were elected at the same time. I know it takes some time to accomplish but this certainly merits investigation if there is public support for it. Frank Kessler
It’s certainly worth looking at. At the county level, the Commissioner and Council positions are staggered. Don
