Churubusco: A football town with a basketball problem

Posted on 26 November 2009

basketballs_thumbCHURUBUSCO, Ind (Nov. 25, 2009) – Churubusco is not a basketball town.  Mike McBride wants to change that.

McBride enters his second season as the head coach for the Churubusco boys basketball team.  The Eagles finished 6-15 last year, which was the programs best record since the 2005-2006 season.  But, 6 wins doesn’t satisfy McBride’s hunger.  Since his first day on the job, Coach McBride has had one goal in mind:  a sectional title.  In his first team address, he herded the players into the gymnasium and showed them all the banners on the wall – none of which are basketball banners.

McBride explained to his players that the road to a championship is the road less traveled and would require a tremendous commitment from them.  In a school where baseball competes annually for a conference title, where wrestlers regularly go deep into the tournament, where the track team just won its first conference title, and where the football team has established itself as a perennial power, basketball has lagged behind for … well, forever.  And so the basketball coach took a page from the Busco football playbook – he took his team into the weight room.  Some of the best basketball coaches in the state refuse to allow their teams to lift weights, but McBride saw a lack of toughness, strength, and team speed.  All summer long, the basketball players lifted with the football team before going into the gym for their drills.  The time invested has all been in an effort to reach the team’s ultimate goal:  a sectional title … something the Busco basketball program has yet to accomplish.

With a plethora of experienced players returning for the Eagles, and no seniors on the team – the stage has been set.  The Eagles return Juniors Tavin Herendeen (5-11″ 150lbs), Kyle Monk (6′2″ 190lbs), Kyle Mathewson (6′2″ 195lbs), Jordan Turner (6′2″ 190lbs), and Dylan Herendeen (5′8″ 140lbs).  The Eagles also gain sophomores Josh LeFever (6′2″ 170lbs), Dylan Jones (6′3″ 185lbs), and Tyler Arrowsmith (6′7″ 195lbs).

McBride’s hard-nosed, no nonsense coaching style may be just what this program needs to get the job done.  Only time will tell.

  1. make solar panels says:

Wow, this blog is definately getting bookmarked. Great Info all over the place.

  2. roger hartup says:

Dont know if this will get to the varsity basketball coach. I am personally supportive of the team working out with weights. My recollections go way back to the early sixties. The tallest person on the team was about 6 foot 2. Everyone of the players could pin a ball above the rim, and many times could block out well enough to let the ball hit the floor. We didnt win any sectionals, but we won a respectable amount of games. Now, there are probably rules against it, but the coach also had the players practicing with weights around their ankles. Good luck and good scoring for the season.

  3. BG says:

Coach McBride is forward thinking and progressive enough to know what all the professional coaches know: a stronger athlete is a better athlete! The notion that basketball players can’t lift weights is antiquated.

  4. Concerned Fan says:

We suck so bad we do have a basketball problem. Realy 0-4 so much for doing good this year right? I dont even think we can beat manchester thats how good we are. Its also really childish how are McBride kicks the bench when one of the players tries to do something good and get everyone pumped up. And if you dont think it pumped anyone up youre wrong i have talked to a lot of basketball players on the team and they said they felt like they got pumped up. McBride should also think about geting a win before he even thinks of a sectional championship. He says nonsence coaching to what do you thinks going on right now? Its also funny how the assistant couch aka the math teacher talks up a player and says we will win when we have him back and what happend when he came back? not a single thing but another loss.

  5. Disappointed Fan says:

Ok. So Busco is starting 0-4. Maybe McBride should worry about getting a win instead of getting a sectional championship. Busco has talent on the team. So I don’t want to hear they are making progress they should be a premeire basketball team. People thought that our last basketball coach was the problem. Do you see what he has did with the girls team now that is a good coach right there. Its about time its not all about the name and we start winning some basketball games. I think its funny how a assistant coach says that one player makes up the team but, when they come back in the game they still lose.

  6. Busco says:

Everyone knows that injuries are a part of the game. How bad were the patriots without Tom Brady or the bears without Brian Urlacher? When you are missing two starters from your team it will be a slow start. Of course Busco will be better… it will just take a little longer. There have been benefits… Matthewson has stepped up this year and is doing great; LeFever, Nicodemus, Turner, Herendeen, and Arrowsmith are all improved since last year. So in response to these “concerned fans”, support these players/friends of yours. Basketball will come around, Coach Etzler did not change football around in a year and they won a Conference Championship this year after years of hard work! Coach McBride won’t change this around in a year either, but I have to admit…the players basketball knowledge and understanding of the game is a lot higher than in years past. Go Eagles!

  7. Pissed Fan says:

I think the basketball team is terrible! McBride doesn’t even deserve a win with his childish attitude. He shouldn’t even have a coaching job. What is he thinking. He obviously isn’t a good coach.FIRE HIM!!! Stop embarrassing yourself McBride and just give up your job.Kyle Mathewson is the only one that isn’t afraid to drive the ball.Brig Perlich back. Who wants to waste $5 to watch a worthless coach? Not me.0-4?

  8. Coach Sade says:

Ahhhh…let the bitching begin. The football program went 3-7, 1-9, and 4-6 under Etzler before going 10-2 in 2005…an interesting fact. Coach McBride and his kids will right the ship. As far as the kicking of the bench–do you not watch sports much? Sounds like an angry parent on a which hunt to me.

  9. ihatemcbride says:

First of all in my opinion i don’t think coach Mcbride isn’t a good coach for the guys.We have many skilled people on this team and mcbride
isn’t bringing the talent out in them.We should find another coach.

  10. 1996 Graduate says:

I love this article, it was very well written! Second, the comments are really interesting especially the ones obviously written by students. If you are going to voice your opinion about your coaches and teachers at least check your spelling.

Try to work together instead of against each other, you may be different teams or sports but you are still only 1 school !

    Good Luck

  11. Disappointed Athlete says:

Everything is much easier on the kids who play sports when the fans have their back. The problems that are inflicted upon poor programs start with the attitude of the fans. Is does no good for people such as, Concerned Fan, to get on here and dis the team that is trying to change the whole view on basketball for a town that has seen few winning seasons in the past. Support and encouragement are the only thing fans can do to help make the change. So, Concerned Fan, stick to you cleaning duties, work on your spelling (nonsense), and leave the coaching for the coaches. As wise as you maybe, you are only administering more problems with you drama, and next time why don’t you use your name so they know who to confront when they need a new coach.

  12. Mike Oxbig (Pissed Fan #2) says:

This article is very swell because of the fact that we are 0-4. That tells us that we obviously suck and need a new plan. I do not think a new coaching staff will solve this problem. We should have a tall person learn how to play. We have one, but we need a person like Tyler Fulkerson. He is a cat.

  13. T-Money the Cat says:

I am a cat. I know that I can spell very good. Disappointed athlete, you need to work on your grammar. “Is does no good for people such as, Concerned Fan…..” That makes no sense. As a cat I have been alive for many years, using only 1 of my lives. I am a friend of Concerned Fan, he knows his basketball. What makes you people think he needs to stick to his “cleaning duties”? Stupid people in this world, leave the TRUE comments to us cats.

  14. the cat says:

    basketball is cool

  15. Hungry says:

Our lunches are to expensive.I am hungry after lunch.FEED ME!!

  16. Who are you? says:

To coach Sade, first of all who do you think you are? Your not even a basketball coach. Why do you think you can be cussing on this website? What does basketball have to do with football and Etzler? You also spelled the wrong kind of “which.”

  17. Fair Weather Fans... says:

It is funny how most of these negative comments come from students at Churubusco. It is also funny that these unsupporting students got cut from the basketball team! It sounds like they had their feelings hurt! It probably hurts when you get cut from a team that starts 0-4, but the future is bright and everyone knows it. Just give it time! Look at the Boilermakers…a poor team when Keady left them, not much better the first two years with Painter, but look at them now! Top 5 in the nation! Boiler Up!

  18. kyle owen says:

I love how it calls busco a football town yet our baseball team has been the best sport at busco for how long?? It makes no sense how the football team goes to one a to compete for a sectional championship yet the baseball team stays in 2 a and still does really well. i wish we could go to one a so we could win state every year. Our basketball program is a joke. the coaches i had when i played we completely worthless i learned more from my middle school coaches maybe they should hire one of them?!

  19. Coach Sade says:

Congratulations to the boys on the win last last night. Stick together, keep working.

  20. The momba says:

Bravo Kyle, we are not a football town, we are a baseball town with no doubt about it. We are a town with a winning baseball tradition but a losing football tradition, Lee Etzler came into this town and had 3 awful seasons and 1 all right season, then one successful season then what? Being knocked out of the state playoffs earlier and earlier with ever approaching season? and the baseball team keeps up the winning standards that coach grove has laid out in his time at ‘Busco. Etlzer is the problem with all of the sports back at this school, he is not an athletic director, he is a football coach that is overpaid with secretary whom does all his work, as he sits in his office and watches football film, with what result? Being in a 3 way tie for the title of an awful conference and then losing in the first round of the state playoffs to a very poor Adams Central team. And WAYNE GIBSON, the man who made the big deal about losing his position as the girls basketball coach when we only has a 2 year contract, and you bring him back as the softball coach? THAT IS RIDICULOUS! If he would get out of his office and realize football is OVER, maybe we could have successful sports, and as for coach Sade, who do you think you are? I think if we really care about our sports we should look into the man running them, and if he is really capable of doing the correct job, because you know winning football games is everything that matters. Oh and cheers to coach grove for keeping a tradition alive at this school!

  21. HMMM... says:

First of all I think that a couple of people who got cut off the basketball team should of made it. They have good bball skills! Second of all I think that one of the coaches need to step up on their coaching “skills”(Mcbride). And third of all this coach Sade or whatever shouldn’t be talking because what does he know about basketball he is not a basketball coach. And what does football have to do with basketball?? I believe that even though Mcbride doesn’t know what he is doing as a coach people should be more supportive of their school. Ha nice “T-Money the cat”. That is hilarious!

  22. Chris says:

    ***UPDATE REMINDER***
Apparently my first reminder didn’t get through, so let’s try it again. Leave us comments, be constructive, heck, even be critical but be smart about it. If some of the comments we’re receiving continue to come in we will be forced to close them on this story.

Just as a reminder folks, we reserve the right to modify, edit or delete certain comments and I’ve had to as of late as this story continues to stir some emotions.

There’s no need for extreme vulgarities or name calling which we’ve had to edit here at BuscoVoice.

We welcome your comments and feedback, but let’s remember to keep it as civil as possible.

  23. Sandy says:

Well, when Busco is mentioned no longer does the lip curl up and a nasty faced made. Think what you like but over the past couple years there is a respect given to this towns SPORTS, just this year I had a wrestling head coach during a football game look me in the eyes and said “do you guys know how lucky you are to have your athletic directer” my reply yes I do! This has happened aleast twice a year since my sons freshman year.
I am thankful high school sports have been the best for my son! Trust me before high school he had afew I wasn’t real fond of. There is so much jealousy and people thinking they know everything.
I really like Coach Sade, Coach Etzeler, Coach Dock CoachLortie,Coach Riesen,Coach Schmidt, Coach Kimmels. One sports loss is anothers gain. Some people are one sport minded. I love them all.

  24. Jordan Hamilton says:

First of all follow the money, People put more money into the football program than they do anything else. When was the last time u show even half as many people at a baseball game, track meet, wrestling, or at softball like u do at football. We are a FOOTBALL town. Football brings in almost all of the schools money. We didn’t do good in the playoffs because kids broke down and didn’t wanna play. It wasn’t Eztler’s fault and it’s not his fault the basketball team isn’t doing well. Eztler does so much for all of OUR sports programs that you people have no idea about. In my 4 yrs. here Eztler and Sade have done some much for me has a person and as a athlete so back off.

  25. HaHa says:

The top basketball players in the high school are on the team right now! There is no one else that deserves one of those spots! Those kids busted their butts all last year, over the summer, and this fall! That is why the program will change. Never before were basketball players pushed this hard. I would love to hear names of kids that deserve to be out on the floor over the guys that represent our school right now! And to momba…how did baseball do last year? A teams success depends a lot on its leadership! There was 0 leadership from that senior group last year and did they get out of sectionals? Nope

  26. A Grand says:

I enjoy all the sports, but of course, like everyone else, I do have a favorite. I try to follow all, and congratulate Every One of the Players. I think Eztler does a great job, and I think he appreciates the efforts of every Athlete, no matter which sport they play. Those who do not play, for whatever reason, do not realize how much these young athletes put into “their” sport. They spend most of their free time in the weight room, or at a practice, NOT critizing those who are out there busting their butts. I appreciate reading all the supportive comments, and really dislike all the “sour grapes”. To those, I can only assume you are not an athlete, or you would be more supportive of those who are, and it does not matter if they are good, mediocore, or even bad, they are out there trying. Congratulations and good luck to all the teams.

  27. REALLY SMART BASEBALL PLAYER says:

For all you meat heads who think that this is a football town you are wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And since when has anyone from the football team went anywhere???? You may say that no one comes to watch baseball games but at least we can win a title.

  28. Mowgli/Mouse says:

Everyone know’s that this is a golfing town so quit fighting about how terrible our basketball team is and let the golfing team know were behind them.

  29. BG says:

Our basketball team is just fine-anyone ever heard “Rome wasn’t built in a day”? When I read some of the vicious comments about coaches, I wonder why the heck ANYONE would ever want to spend the time and effort it takes for the meager rewards they are paid. Thank goodness there are those that will. Read Teddy Roosevelt’s “The Man in the Arena”-or have it read to you . . .

  30. FB says:

Busco is definetly a football town. Have you not seen how pumped up the WHOLE TOWN gets for a friday night football game?

  31. Ronald McDonald says:

    To HaHa:
I don’t recall the basketball team having any success in the past decade. At least the baseball team has won a few sectional and regional championships in the past 5 years. And with a few new players, I can almost guarantee great success for the next 2 years. So you better check your info before you wreck yourself.

  32. parent says:

    To: REALlY SMART BASEBALL PLAYER?
It has been years since anyone has went anywhere in baseball proably before you were born. There has been alot of kids that has been to college on some sort of sport schollarships, but to you thats not going anywhere? Your titles don’t pay the bill. The meat heads support you!!

  33. The momba says:

Lets just see where coach etzler’s football teams go in the future if we have these “GRATE” teams that have gotten steadily worse since the very good 07 team. A real coach is more active in development of the youth which he has let get out of control with his lack of intrest he shows to the youth and female athletics…Dont judge him on his football coaching thats NOT his job..he is athletic director not just a football coach, so that requires him to do more then sit in his office and playing around with sade…and i am a busco sports fan, but i want things ran the same between the males and the womans’ sports and there has been more then one occurrence of title 9 since etzler has been at the helm of our department. and as for the fact WE ARE A BASEBALL TOWN! we are a high school football nation, high school football attracts more fans that any single sport in the US, so this is not just a jump on the band wagon fair weather busco sports like normal..when we have had steady winning seasons….title 9 makes it even for EVERYONE and its the LAW so it needs to be looked over when we hire female athletic coaches…best luck to all of busco sports over the remainder of the season and into next

  34. a parent says:

title 9 is about fairness with the MONEY and we are. It never ceases to amaze me when NON athletic people don’t have a clue.

  35. fairness says:

In the pursuit of fairness title 9 has hurt alot of mens sports in college. When there is not an interest goverment steps in and says “Lets make it fair”.
Wasn’t there a argument afew years ago about the fairness of the color of head football coaches in the NFL? In being fair innocent people can get hurt.

  36. FB says:

Hey Momba why dont you get a life and stop worrying about talking bad about a football program that you know nothing about?
