Local libraries announce December events

After the Friends of the Library Christmas Walk Saturday and Sunday, many of the visitors stopped by the Churubusco Public Library to enjoy refreshments and to visit with Mr. and Mrs. S. Claus (aka (Mike and Bonnie Hazen).

Churubusco Public Library:

Churubusco, Ind. (December 2009) — The following events will take place at the Churubusco Public Library during the month of December.

Movie at the Library – Take and adventure with the Churubusco Public Library on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 10 a.m. as we present Disney Pixar’s UP! We hope to see you there!

Toys for Tots – This holiday season, the Churubusco Public Library will be collecting donations for Toys for Tots. NEW, UNWRAPPED toys can be dropped off at the library and placed under the Christmas tree until Monday, Dec. 14. All donations will be given to the Toys for Tots foundation who will distribute the toys to children in need who may not otherwise receive a gift this Christmas. This year remember the reason for the season and give a donation to a child less fortunate.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town – Santa Claus and Mrs. Clause will be visiting the Churubusco Public Library on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. Santa will share some of his favorite holiday stories and listen to Christmas wishes.

Holiday Storytime with Miss Sam – Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m the Churubusco Public Library will be having Holiday Storytime each Wednesday at 6 p.m. up until Dec. 23. Each week Miss Sam will be sharing holiday themed stories (Thanksgiving and Christmas) for children of all ages. All children are invited to wear their pajamas and bring a stuffed animal. Come participate in this fun event.

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (December 2009) – Events scheduled for December at Peabody Public Library are as follows:

Peabody Public Library will close at 8:00 PM on Wednesday, December 30 and reopen Saturday, January 2 at 9:00 AM.

ADULT DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS

BROWN BAG BEST SELLERS Tuesday, December 1 12:10 PM The book for this month is “Midwives” by Chris Bohjalian. Walk-ins are always welcome. This is a FREE program.

BEADING WITH LAURA Wednesday, December 2 6 PM Various beading techniques used in making jewelry are presented. Current project and fee TBA Registration is required.

QUILTING WITH CHLOE Thursdays, December 3 & 17 5:30 PM Supply list is available at circulation desk or a kit may be purchased for $10. Registration is required.

CC TATTER TOTS Mondays, December 7, 14, 21 & 28 5:30 PM Learn to create beautiful lace patterns using the needle technique. $11 fee for first time participation only. Registration is required.

BYO BEADS Wednesday, December 9 1-8 PM Enjoy the company of other people who have caught the beading bug! Stop in any time. An instructor will be available to assist if you have questions. This is a FREE program.

GRANDMA GOT RUN OVER BY A FRUITCAKE Wednesday, December 9 6 PM Our third annual fruitcake competition, with musical entertainment by Chain O’ Lakes Barbershop Chorus. This is a FREE program.

JOYCE FRY CONCERT Thursday, December 10 5 PM Join hammered dulcimer artist Joyce Fry as she plays holiday music in the adult department. This is a FREE program.

NAGANO TRIO Saturday, December 12 1 PM The local wind trio (oboe, clarinet and flute) performs holiday and classical favorites in the adult department. This is a FREE program.

DARK CITY MOVIE NIGHT Saturday, December 12 7 PM This month’s film is “White Heat” starring James Cagney. Soda & popcorn available. This is a FREE program.

SCRAPPING MOMS Mondays, December 14& 28 10 AM * 1 PM Join fellow scrapbookers for an informal session of sharing ideas. This is a FREE program.booksold_library_

HEAVENLY HARP SOUNDS Monday, December 14 1 PM Classical harpist Devon Haupt of South Bend in concert in the Adult Department. This is a FREE program.

CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS

Preschool Story Time meets on Tuesdays at 10:30 AM and Thursdays at 4:00 PM. Story Time theme for December 1 and 3 is Christmas Animals, December 8 and 10 is Dashing with Reindeer and December 15 and 17 is a Visit with Santa. Join us for stories, songs, finger plays and a craft.

Toddler Time meets in the Children’s Department at 10:30 AM on Tuesdays, December 1, 8 and 15. This easy-going group is designed for parents and their children under age three. Play Dates are Fridays, December 4 and 11, at 10:30 AM for parents and kids to come meet up with friends in a welcoming atmosphere complete with toys the kids will enjoy.

Joni Walker Art Classes * Thursdays, December 10 and 17, at 4:00 PM. Sign up at the Children’s Services Desk, call the Children’s Department, or register online. Fee is $2 per person per class to cover the cost of materials. Ages 5 and up. Limit of 30 students.

Craft Saturdays * Saturdays, December 5, 12 and 19. Come anytime between 10 AM and 4 PM to do a variety of Christmas crafts. All ages are welcome.

Cooking 101 * Monday, December 7 at 4:00 PM. Kids can learn cooking basics and create tasty treats. This month we will be preparing several Christmas cookies and candies. For grades 3-12. Sign-up requested. Limit of 20 students.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie * Tuesday, December 8 at 4:30. Calling all muggles * join us for a showing of the latest release in the Harry Potter saga. Wizard food will be provided. All ages welcome.

Ceramic Ornament Painting with Marcia Cole * Wednesday, December 9 at 4:30 for grades K-2 and at 6:00 PM for grades 3-8. Paint a ceramic ornament to hang on your own tree at home. Several different styles provided. Sign-up requested. Limit of 12 students per class.

Candle Making * Monday, December 14 at 4:00 PM. Looking for a great gift idea for someone? Come make a unique candle with Kathy. For grades 3 and up. Sign-up requested. Limit of 15 students.

Musik Garten * Friday, December 18 at 10:30 AM. Mrs Felger will play music and sing songs with the children and parents to improve their growth and development. For ages 18 months to 3 years. Sign-up requested. Limit of 25.

Holiday Movie Marathon for Kids * Monday, December 21, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM. Visit the Children’s Department to view some movies over the Holidays. Strawberry Shortcake Holiday Dreams, Thomas and Friends: Sodor Friends Holiday, Santa Buddies, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and Up. Check with the Children’s Department for specific times.

Lego Contest * Tuesday, December 22, from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM. Bring in your own LEGO blocks and build a creative design. Others will vote for their favorite LEGO creation to determine the winner. The LEGOS contest is divided into three levels. Levels are determined by grades: Level 1: Pre-K thru 1st grade; Level 2: 2nd thru 4th grade; and Level 3: 5th grade & up. Winners’ creations will be on display in the young adult display case and prizes will be given. Registration requested.

Balloons with Christie * Monday, December 28 at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Join Christie in the Children’s department and learn how to make balloon sculptures. For ages 7 and up. Sign-up requested. Limit of 20 kids per session.

Kids Gaming * Tuesday, December 29 from 10:00 until 11:30 AM. Join your friends for a fun morning of games on the Wii, X-Box and Playstation. For grades K-4. Sign-up requested. Limit of 15 students.booksold_library_

Tween Gaming * Tuesday, December 29 from 2:00 until 3:30 PM. Join your friends for a fun afternoon of games on the Wii, X-Box 360 and Playstation 2. For grades 5-8. Sign-up requested. Limit of 15 students.

Teen Gaming * Tuesday, December 29 from 4:30 until 7:00 PM. Join your friends for a fun evening of games on the Wii, X-Box 360 and Playstation 2. For grades 9-12. Sign-up requested. Limit of 15 students

Art work displayed in the Children’s Department * This month we have art work from Indian Springs Middle School by 6th grader Chris Shull and 7th graders Brandon Graham, Katie Doehrmann, Ashley Williamson, Brett Roberts, Jasmine Hiss and Bayley Smith.
