The Turtle Days cornhole competition proved to be a popular event. Turtle Days officials are contemplating a fall fundraiser that will include a cornhole tournament.

There was a little of this, and a little of that in this year’s Turtle Days Festival parade, with many decorating their entries in this year’s theme, “The 60th Celebration of Oscar.”

Hundreds of cars and people turned out for the first annual car, truck & bike show at Brady’s Auto on U.S. 33.

Vickie Powell was the grand prize raffle ticket winner of $750 at the Annual Turtle Days Festival. Three members of the Brumbaugh family swept the karaoke contest and six winners in two age divisions were announced at the Turtle Days Talent show.

The Turtle Run 5K has become a popular addition to the annual Turtle Days Festival and this year was co-sponsored by Youth For Christ and the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel.

The Turtle Days Festival Association is sponsoring a girls softball tournament on Saturday, June 20, at Churubusco Community Park.

The brochures and raffle tickets and posters are printed, registrations for festival events are rolling in, and children are busy catching that enthusiastic, fast-sprinting turtle that just might win the big race at the Churubusco Turtle Days Festival June 17-20.

Oscar the Turtle will be this year’s Grand Marshal of the 2009 Turtle Days Festival parade and the 60th anniversary celebration of the Hunt for Oscar. And, another famous turtle, Crunch, will be the special guest at an exhibit at this year’s Turtle Days Festival, June 17-20.

Starting next week, don’t be surprised to see Oscar the Turtle reading “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss at the local library, or eating fries at a nearby restaurant or dancing a jig on The Point as he celebrates the 60th anniversary of his debut as the Beast of Busco.

Get ready for the The 60th Celebration of “Oscar” 2009! It’s been 60 years since the Town of Churubusco and people from around the world were captivated by headlines of a giant turtle sighted in a nearby lake. A great search for the massive beast took place, but the turtle – dubbed Oscar by the media – got away.

Kirk Gray, president of the Churubusco Turtle Days Festival Board of Directors, was more than willing to show up Friday at National City Bank to accept a check for $2,500 toward the 2009 festival.
