One man is in fair condition after rolling his van Sunday evening on U.S. 33 near the Noble/Whitley County line.
Police and fire/rescue units arrived to find a full sized van rolled onto it’s side with the driver trapped inside.
Fire department personnel had to use the jaws of life to cut the roof off and free the injured man. He was taken to an area hospital in fair condition.
Two recent stories at Indiana News Center and WANE.com are reporting that the Indiana State Police are going to step up patrols on U.S. 33 aiming to reduce fatalities on this 30 mile stretch from Fort Wayne to Ligonier.
The focus has been on Churubusco recently as a rash of accidents have made people very conscious of how dangerous this road can be. Case in point would be the following stories we’ve posted in the last couple of years of accidents from minor to major, in town and outside of town.
Obviously U.S. 33 is a dangerous road and we hope more patrols will help, but will they even be able to enforce the speed limits in certain areas? There are very few areas north of Churubusco that have a safe spot for a police car to turn around and chase down a speeding driver because of the curves, narrow spots and the hilly terrain.
What are the causes of the accidents?

One quiet evening, relaxing with friends in his western-themed retreat at Elkhorn Ranch in Larwill, Kim Reiff realized his annual get-togethers at the ranch could be a source of support for a local family facing a tragic situation.
“We have annual parties out here and decided that we should just start doing this for a good cause,” Reiff said.
Reiff, along with friends Greg Fahl and Mark Mynhier, had been talking about Whitley County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Adam Schrader and the nearly fatal vehicle accident that occured in March while Schrader was responding to an emergency call in northwestern Whitley County. Schrader survived the accident, but his recovery has been tenuous and difficult, personally and financially.

Details are still a bit sketchy at the moment, but a pursuit just west of Churubusco ended after a Whitley County Sheriff’s deputy car was stolen during the pursuit.
The pursuit began at U.S. 30 and S.R. 205 when a green vehicle refused to stop for the officer. The chase continued north on S.R. 205, when the person fleeing hit a set of “stop sticks” set up by a Churubusco police officer, near Blue Lake Road.
The suspects then veered into a field on the south side of the road and proceeded to head towards a patch of woods.
At some point the officer radioed that his squad car had been taken, and was was spotted heading in the direction of the county road with red lights and sirens blaring.
During the chase – with the perpetrator still inside – the squad car made a sharp turn, barreling the car through a ditch at 300 North and 675 East. The chase continued until he tried to make one last turn at Johnson Road and S.R. 205, near the area of Collins.
He fled on foot across the highway and was apprehended seconds later by a host of officers.
An ambulance was called to the scene for the main complaint of pain by the suspect. No one else was injured in the incident.
The squad car is pulled onto a wrecker. Officials said the vehicle was totaled in the crash.
