CHURUBUSCO, Ind. (Jan. 5, 2009) — Want to help out Churubusco High School while shopping for groceries from the comfort of your home?

It’s easy.

Market Day is the main fundraiser of the Churubusco High School Student Council, and each month the Market Day truck arrives at CHS on a pre-determined date and delivers grocery orders for pickup by local residents.

The school receives ten percent from all sales of the prepackaged and frozen food items and groceries.

“The Student Council uses the money for activities for the student body such as pizza parties, dances and Spirit Day,” said CHS teacher Amanda Smerdel, advisor/sponsor for the group.

Market Day brochures with a full list of grocery items, including this month’s specials, are available at the high school or middle school offices.

This month’s orders are due in the high school office by Friday, Jan. 16 or by noon on Saturday, Jan. 17, if ordering on the Internet.

The orders will be delivered Thursday, Jan. 22 from 6-7 p.m. at the school.

Market Day patrons pay for their orders by cash or check at the time of delivery.

Find steaks, poultry and seafood items as well as side dishes and popular desserts at Market Day Direct (online) or in the featured monthly brochure available at the school.

It’s also easy to shop online at www.marketday.com. Log in and create your account. Just by filling out your zip code, CHS will automatically receive credit.

Specials for January include a number of holiday items that are greatly reduced for clearance, as well as asparagus spears, beef brisket with sauce, breaded mozzarella sticks with sauce, apple blossoms dessert, baby back ribs, bacon-wrapped pork tournedos, wild rice stuffed chicken breasts, apple berry breakfast bowl, beef patties and peas.

About Market Day

The company was founded by Trudi Temple, a mother and avid gardener who spent a lifetime helping others in need.

A Market Day truck unloads deliveries for Churubusco area residents in December.

In 1973, Temple was creating flower arrangements to raise funds for local churches and missions in poverty-stricken countries. When she could no longer supply enough flowers from her garden, she began buying them wholesale at Chicago’s famous Randolph Street market.

Temple discovered the market also sold fresh produce. She formed a food cooperative in her neighborhood, driving to Chicago each week to buy products that she would then offer to friends and neighbors to support her missionary work.

In 1975, Temple’s daughter asked her to bake a cake for a school fundraiser. Temple brought cases of fresh produce instead, and the idea was a huge hit! The following week the first “Produce Day” was held in Clarendon Hills, Ill.

News spread quickly and it wasn’t long before other schools were requesting similar programs. Temple began supplementing produce with meats, seafood and poultry, and Produce Day became a monthly “Market Day” program at schools.

Today Market Day is a complete fundraising source serving over 6,000 organizations around the country, including Churubusco.
