Low cost spay/neutering info at ‘Go Cats Go’ this Saturday in Columbia city

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

COLUMBIA CITY, Indiana (August 18, 2010) — This Saturday – August 21 – Go Cats Go will be in Columbia City at the Advance Auto store on north Main Street from 11 – 2 p.m., answering questions about their spay-neuter transport service and having some of their cats available for adoption. Visitors will also get to meet some of the Whitley County Humane Shelter cats who are looking for homes at this adoption event.

It is probably a combination of the economy, the time of year, and the sad fact that not nearly enough people in our community have spayed or neutered their cats, according to Humane Shelter officials, but the shelter is FULL of adorable cats and kittens right now. Nearly all of the adult cats have been spayed or neutered, and there is a good selection of cats who also have been declawed.

Because there are some very dedicated volunteers who visit the shelter and play with the cats, most of the cats are friendly, playful, and used to being handled. There are cats of many sizes, shapes, colors, and hair lengths – from shiny black shorthairs to mostly white longhairs. The ages of the felines range from 5 weeks to 12 years. Some of the cats are very active and playful (like Sooty or Harry), and some just want to be quiet lap cats. But most are in between – playful when the mood strikes them – racing around the room and chasing the laser pointer, then willing to curl up on your lap when they’re tuckered out from all the playing. All of them need good homes, so please come in and meet them today, so that you can choose the perfect cat for your home and family. The shelter staff is doing its best to care for the cats and to help them find good homes, but they need your help. Please consider adopting a cat or kitten or two.

If you already have cats, shelter volunteers urge you to please get them spayed or neutered. Cats who have been spayed or neutered make much better pets. The females are much easier to live with: they don’t caterwaul or do the little “cat in heat” dance, and most important, they don’t get pregnant and add to the feline overpopulation problem. Male cats are better off neutered, too: the litter box is much less pungent and the cat is much less inclined to fight (which can lead to injuries and disease), and neutered males are less inclined to “spray”.

If cost is a concern, when thinking about spay/neuter surgery, there are low-cost options available in the area. One of these is Go Cats Go – a transport service operating out of Fort Wayne on the second Monday of each month.

It works like this: cat owners make an appointment with Go Cats Go ahead of time and make arrangements to bring their cat(s) to them in Fort Wayne (early Monday morning on the day of the transport – or Sunday evening for an additional $3 per cat). The Go Cats Go transport service then takes the cat(s) to the Hamilton County low-cost spay/neuter clinic. That evening, Go Cats Go notifies the cat owners when the transport is about an hour from Fort Wayne, so the owners can simply pick up their “fixed” cat.

Prices are $35 for male cats and $40 for females (+$20 if the cat is pregnant). Barn cats may be eligible to be spayed/neutered for a reduced fee.

More information is available at http://gocatsgo.org/ To make reservations, call 260-484-5292.

PeakCOLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (August 2, 2010) – Columbia City Mayor Jim Fleck, Peak Performance Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy (Peak Performance) owner Sean White and other community leaders gathered today for a groundbreaking ceremony at the company’s new Columbia City location.

“This building project is something I have looked forward to for a number of years,” said Peak Performance owner Sean White, “I am excited about the opportunity to work with Columbia City and the Whitley County EDC to grow Peak Performance at this new location.”

The new building will allow the company to expand its physical therapy practice and offer additional wellness and fitness programs within the community. The 6,000 SF, two-story facility will also include leasable office space for other medical related businesses, which may attract new medical practices to Columbia City.

“I am pleased to see Peak Performance investing and creating jobs in our community,” said Columbia City Mayor Jim Fleck, “It’s a great day when we join a local entrepreneur like Sean White to celebrate the expansion of his business.”

Peak Performance now has five fulltime employees (including four fulltime therapists) at its Columbia City location and plans to add two additional employees at the new facility. Peak Performance also has a Warsaw office. Earlier this summer, the Columbia City Common Council approved ten-year tax abatement to phase-in new property taxes associated with the project.

Project partners include architect Mike Christoffersen, builder Mike Todoran, First Source Bank, and the Community Development Corporation of Northeast Indiana.

Columbia City Farmers Market

Two Farmers and a Fork

By Debbie and Chuck Zumbrun

On a Saturday morning when it’s still cool but promising to get hot, there’s nothing better to do than to visit a local farmers market.  We have one just down Highway 205 in Columbia City.

Farmers Market Scene

Farmers Market Scene

The Columbia City Farmers Market runs every Saturday 8 til noon from May through October.  It occupies the west and south sides of the Courthouse Square in the heart of Columbia City. This Saturday there were about 25 vendors set up, selling not only produce, but also herbs, baked goods, jam and jellies, honey, soap, and even whole chickens.

Today’s offering of fruits and vegetables included blueberries, zucchini, turnips, kohlrabi, cabbages, cucumbers, green beans, greens, beets, basil, corn, tomatoes, muskmelons, onions, potatoes, garlic, and peaches.

Beets and More

Beets and More

Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi

Fresh Lettuce

Fresh Lettuce

Almost all the produce looked newly picked and fresh and tasty. Even the beets looked so good we were tempted to buy some, even though they are Chuck’s least favorite food in the entire world.

We did buy a muskmelon, tomatoes, and sweet corn.

Our Haul

Our Haul

After buying our produce we stashed it in the car and went back to take some pictures and talk with some of the vendors. When we got back to the car it was filled with the aroma of ripe muskmelon. Forget buying air fresheners, just put a ripe muskmelon in your car if you want it to smell heavenly!

You don’t need recipes when dealing with this sort of fresh garden goodness. The simpler the better to let the produce shine. We’ll be having corn on the cob, boiled a few minutes then eaten with butter, salt and lots of black pepper. We’re going to use the tomatoes in classic bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches. The tomatoes are hothouse tomatoes.  While ripe and fresh, they’re not going to be bursting with that outdoor vine-ripened flavor so that you’d want to eat them sliced on their own. Slices of muskmelon for dessert finish out our “celebrate summer in Indiana” meal.

Produce from a farmers market probably isn’t going to be as good as what you grow in your own garden, but it is worlds better than what you can buy at the grocery store. The produce usually travels shorter distances, allowing for longer ripening before picking.  Talk to the vendors to find out how the produce was grown, and where it came from.  Go to the market regularly so that you become familiar with specific vendors and their wares.  Spending a little extra time and effort to get produce at a farmers market will pay you back with some good and healthy eating!

Residents and pets enjoy Paws in the Park; to become an annual event?

Tags: , , , , , ,

Some local residents enjoyed a day in the park with their pets and visiting with members from the Whitley County Animal Shelter at the Paws in the Park fundraiser event held Saturday.

Paws-in-the-park-3
Paws in the Park organizer, Danielle Hartmann (left) and fellow residents enjoyed a day of fun at the park with their pets. Joey, the adorable and incredibly playful kitten seen in the picture, visited from the Whitley County Animal Shelter and is available for adoption.

A silent auction was held to raise money for the shelter and Humane Society of Whitley County t-shirts, tote bags, and other merchandise were available to purchase with all proceeds going to the shelter. Donations were also accepted.

Paws-in-the-park-sutton
Sutton is one of the many loving animals available for adoption at the Whitley County Animal Shelter.
The members of the shelter brought along some of their furry friends awaiting adoption to enjoy the fresh air and meet the residents.

Paws in the Park raised about $250 this year and the organizers may make the event into an annual one, hopefully raising more and more each year as well as increasing awareness of the shelter and the needs of animals.

It often may be forgotten that the Whitley County Animal Shelter represents and serves Churubusco due to its location in Columbia City, but they want to remain active in the Busco community and hope residents of Busco will remember them when looking for a pet.

There are many great animals waiting for good homes at the shelter. The shelter currently is holding a sale on their senior cats so if you are looking for an older cat, head on down to the shelter and meet some of the great cats they have up for adoption.

Paws-in-the-park-princess
Princess enjoyed wrestling and playing with fellow shelter dog Suzy. Both are available for adoption.

Perhaps you are an animal lover who is unable to adopt a pet for some reason–already have one (or many), significant other who is not receptive to the idea, etc.– the shelter is always looking for volunteers to work at the shelter. Volunteer orientation is held at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. You could also donate materials the shelter needs to function. The following are items that may be donated:

Pet Food

Canned cat food (any variety)

Canned dog food (Pedigree, Iams, Alpo)

Dog biscuits

Rawhide chews (medium size)

Cat treats (crunchy or moist, any variety)

Tall kitchen trash bags (13 gallon size)

Batteries (AA, AAA, or 9-volt)

Ink for HP Printer (Office Jet Pro K850, HP 10 Black and HP 11 Colors)

Supplies can be taken directly to the shelter located at 950 S. Line Street, Columbia City, IN 46725.

Another way to help if you’re not in the market for a pet is to vote for the shelter in the Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge. The shelters with the most votes can win weekly prizes of $1,000 or grants of up to $20,000. You can vote once a day, every day! While at the site, you can also “Click to Give”. With the click of your mouse once every day you help provide supplies to animals in shelters all over the country! To “Click to Give”vote for the shelter follow the following directions:

Storms wreak havoc in Northeast Indiana

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

(June 23, 2010) — Most of Churubusco seemed to escape the heavy damage reported in almost every surrounding community, including Columbia City, Albion, Auburn and Fort Wayne as storms pelted the area late last night.

Many cities and towns were without electricity for most of the night and the following morning.

On Goshen Road, in front of the Bowen Center and American Legion, the street was closed for hours after a windswept metal roof wrapped itself around telephone wires, downing the wires and the utility poles holding the wires.
