Vote for the Whitley County Animal Shelter at www.theanimalrescuesite.com and they could win $20,000 to help pets in need!
The Animal Rescue Site is hosting a special challenge for eligible Petfinder.com member shelter and rescue groups. The grand prize is a $20,000 grant, and they will be awarding many other grants to rescue groups with the most votes – a total of $100,000 in grants for animal welfare organizations.
Think how many animals the shelter could help for $20,000!
All you have to do is click to help rescued animals receive food and care, and then vote in The Animal Rescue Site $100,000 Shelter Challenge.
You can help donate food and care to animals in shelters all over the country by clicking the purple button on the homepage that says “Click Here to Give – it’s FREE!” Then go on and vote in the Shelter Challenge.
To vote in the Shelter Challenge look for the little graphical representation of purple tabs (like on a loose-leaf notebook) along the right side of the page. If you click on the tab that says Shelter Challenge, it will take you to the appropriate place to vote for the shelter. Enter the name Whitley County Animal Shelter and follow the instructions. The rescue organizations with the most votes will win. Let’s all do our part to help the local shelter!
Both of these actions are absolutely free! You can vote once a day, every day, from January 18, 2010
through April 18, 2010. Every time you vote, or tell a friend to vote, you are making a huge difference
for the shelter and animals.
The Humane Shelter & Adoption Center of Whitley County (the shelter’s official name, although the Challenge uses Petfinder’s name for us: Whitley County Animal Shelter) is our community’s facility for homeless and abandoned pets. They provide the animals in the shelter with food and a warm place to sleep, give them basic veterinary care, and do what they can to find them good homes, including posting pictures and information about the pets on Petfinder.com, putting up posters and taking the animals out into the community on Road Shows. The Whitley County Animal Shelter has also sponsored low-cost cat spay and neuter days.

The Humane Society of Whitley County
The Animal Rescue Site is a “Click to Give” website. You can click on a button to help fund food and care for animals. It’s free, and only takes a second of your time. Click every day!
Petfinder is an online, searchable database of animals that need homes, and a directory of almost 12,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Pet of the Week
Brought to you by Fort Financial Credit Union
Josie is a very loving female brown mackerel tabby with extremely soft fur and exceptionally beautiful green eyes, who was probably born in 2008 or early 2009. This girl is very sweet and will be a wonderful cat if you’re looking for affection. She will be a great lap cat. Please come in and meet her today and consider adopting her and possibly one of our other beautiful brown mackerel tabbies. Some of us think that they’re the best kind of cat there is.
Come in to the shelter and prepare to fall in love. If you are interested in adding a cat to your family, please stop by the Whitley County Humane Shelter to meet Josie. The shelter is located at 951 S. Line St., Columbia City.
Shelter hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 2-7 and Saturday, 1-5.
Call the shelter if you would like to arrange a time to meet her at 260-244-6664, or e-mail http://dirhswc@yahoo.com.

Pet of the Week
Brought to you by Fort Financial Credit Union
Peaches and her sister, BeeBee, were born (and orphaned) in early June 2009, and were bottle-fed as kittens.
Because of this, they are very affectionate, and comfortable with people. Although they’re older kittens, they are still quite playful and are adorable to watch while romping and playing together. If you’re thinking about adopting more than one cat, these littermates get along great and will give you hours and hours of enjoyment. But even if you only want one of them, they’re young enough to be fine as single cats.
If you have children under 6, and are looking at kittens, kittens over the age of 6 months are better with young children, since they are not as fragile. Peaches and BeeBee would be perfect.
Peaches is an orange tabby who has a buff-colored face. BeeBee is a shorthaired orange tabby who has white on her face. Both kittens are affectionate and playful.
To meet Peaches and BeeBee, please call the Whitley County Humane Shelterat 260.244.6664, or e-mail the shelter at dirhswc@yahoo.com.

Jan Brady is a young pup who was brought to the shelter with her five siblings (Peter, Greg, Bobbi, Cindy and Marcia), and mother Carol. The puppies are approximately 5-weeks-old.
This litter is quite a mixture of looks. Mother Carol appears to be a Shetland Sheepdog-mix and weighs only 15-20 pounds. The puppies are almost as large as their mother, so we cannot guarantee future size. If you are interested in adding a puppy to your family, please stop by the Whitley County Humane Shelter to meet the Brady Bunch.
Please call the shelter if you would like to arrange a time to meet him at 260.244.6664, or e-mail dirhswc@yahoo.com.

Floyd was brought to the Whitley County Humane Shelter by his owners who are moving. He is a friendly and playful labby boy.
According to his previous owners, he is good with kids and other dogs, and he is already neutered. Floyd is approximately 6-years-old, but is still a pup at heart. This dog qualifies for our “Seniors for Seniors” special. If you are 60-years-old, or older, you may adopt this pet for half-price.
Please call the shelter for more details at 260-244-6664.
Half-price Cat Sale extended until Christmas 2009
Thanks to the generosity of two of our wonderful volunteers, who are underwriting the difference, the Humane Shelter and Adoption Center of Whitley County is holding a Half-price Cat Sale from now ’til Christmas 2009.
During that time, prospective pet owners may take home one or more of many adorable kitties for half of the normal adoption fee. The refundable spay-neuter deposit still applies. This means that if owners have their own carrier and adopt a spayed or neutered cat, they may take their new pet home for only $32.50!
The shelter has many wonderful cats to choose from – cats of all ages and colors, some already spayed or neutered. All of them are looking for good homes with someone to love.
The price of our cats during this sale (October 1 – December 24, 2009) is:
- Adoption fee: $32.50
- Refundable spay/neuter deposit*: $15.00
- Carrier fee**: $10.00
- Total: $57.50
*This fee is waived if the cat is already spayed or neutered, or refunded to you when you show proof that you have had the cat spayed and neutered.
**This fee is waived if you bring in an carrier to transport your cat/kitten.

Pet of the Week
Sponsored by Fort Financial Credit Union
Fergie is a most unusual cat.
When she and her sister Gumbo came in to the shelter, they both had fur that was sort of kinked, and it made them look old and a little grumpy (they were born in 2008). But now that she has been here for awhile, Fergie’s coat has really blossomed, and her fur is thick and sleek. She is a buff-colored classic (swirled) tabby with a white spot on her throat.
As you can see from her pictures, she is a gorgeous cat. She is also friendly. One of her rear feet appears to have been injured some time in the past, perhaps in a trap. Please come in and meet Fergie today, and consider adopting her.
Please come see this very special girl today at the Whitley County Humane Shelter, 951 S. Line St., Columbia City.
Shelter hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 2-7 and Saturday, 1-5. Those interested also may call 260-244-6664 or go to the WCHS Web site at www.hswc.org.
