Foundation donor funds responsible for new treadmill in Cardiopulmonary Rehab

The $3,000 treadmill was purchased with funds donated to the hospital Foundation. Deter, who also is a volunteer at the hospital, is wearing a Cardiopulmonary Rehab T-shirt, which patients receive upon graduating from the rehab program.

Haleigh Giselle Graves is Parkview Whitley’s first baby of 2010

The first newborn of 2010, Haleigh Giselle Graves, was born at 9:56 a.m., on Jan. 4, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, Ind., to Ryan and Aimee (Anglin) Graves, of Columbia City.

The new baby, who was delivered by Brian Haley, MD, weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 20 ½ inches at birth. Haleigh joins siblings Wesley, 19, Andrew, 13 and Ryleigh, 16 months.

To honor the occasion, the family received a gift basket from Parkview Whitley Hospital that included baby needs and other gifts. Other gifts included a book bag, book and bib from The Peabody Library; a T-shirt, swaddle sack and Vera Bradley diaper bag from the Family Birthing Center nurses, and a monogrammed silver spoon from the hospital volunteers.

The arrival of the family’s new addition will also be recognized in the Family Birthing Center at Parkview Whitley Hospital on its “A Star Is Born” Baby Wall of Fame. The gift is compliments of the Parkview Whitley Hospital Foundation. A nameplate inscribed with the baby’s name and birthday will be prominently displayed within a larger star display on the wall of The Family Birthing Center hallway. The family will receive a certificate suitable for framing as well.

The maternal grandparents are Dan and Marilyn Anglin, of Atwood, IN. The paternal grandparents are Dale and Phyllis Graves, of Springfield, Ohio, and Jim and Linda Bayman, of South Whitley, Ind.

The maternal great-grandparent is Roma Smith, of Warsaw, Ind. The paternal great-grandparents are Don and Jeanette Sullivan, of Columbia City.

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. – Parkview Whitley Hospital invites the public to an open house to meet internal medicine physician Mark A. Burkett, DO, his new medical partner, Keith Baker, MD, and their staff, on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The reception will be held in the Lehmburg Building, Suite C, 333 N. Oak Street, adjacent to the hospital in Columbia City. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

Internal medicine physician Dr. Baker recently joined Parkview FirstCare-Columbia City, which is part of Parkview Physicians’ Group.

‘Diagnosis and Treatment of Joint Pain’ program set for Oct. 29

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. – Parkview Whitley Hospital will present a free community education program, “Diagnosis and Treatment of Joint Pain,” on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s lower-level auditoriums A, B and C. The hospital is located at 353 N. Oak Street in Columbia City.

The education program will be hosted by orthopaedic surgeon Daniel J. Cummiskey, MD, of Summit Orthopaedics in Columbia City.

Topics will include:

• Hip and knee pain
• Diseases of the hip and knee
• Treatment options

Parkview Whitley cancels flu clinics due to shortage of vaccine

flu-shot-2COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. — Parkview Home Health & Hospice has hosted a series of seasonal flu vaccination clinics throughout northeast Indiana since September. Due to greater demand this year, the supply of seasonal flu vaccine is running low and a number of scheduled clinics will need to be canceled.

The following vaccination clinics at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City have been canceled: Tuesday, Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

COLUMBIA CITY, ind. — Parkview Whitley Hospital has hired Keith Baker, MD, Parkview Physicians’ Group, who has joined Mark Burkett, DO, in practice at his new location in the Lehmberg Building, 333 N. Oak St., Columbia City. Baker specializes in in internal medicine.

“We welcome Dr. Baker and his family to Whitley County and Parkview Whitley Hospital,” said John Meister, chief operating officer. “His expertise in internal medicine will complement and enhance the level of healthcare we strive to provide in our communities.”

Baker is proactive in his approach to care, stressing preventive care measures to prevent illnesses and diseases, according to Meister.

“My goal is to help patient’s manage their health to avoid unexpected complications or admissions,” Baker said.

Baker served his internship at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Mich., from 1978 to 1979, and served his residency at the same hospital from 1979 to 1981. He first practiced medicine at Cameron Hospital in Angola from 1981 to 1991, followed by a year at DeKalb Memorial Hospital in Auburn from July 1991 to July 1992. From July 1992 to May 1994 he served at Community Health Center in Coldwater, Mich., and from May 1994 to July 1995 he practiced at Bedford Regional Medical Center in Bedford. He next served at Thorn Hospital in Hudson, Mich., and Foote Memorial Hospital in Jackson, Mich., from August 1995 to October 1999. Prior to moving to Columbia City, he also had privileges at Hillsdale Community Health Center in Hillsdale, Mich.

In 1983, Baker was named a diplomat for the American Board of Internal Medicine, and for three years he was president of the American Heart Association in Steuben County. In 1983, he was vice president of the medical staff at Cameron Hospital in Angola, and in 1984 he was president of the County Medical Society while at Cameron Hospital. In 2004, he received a certificate from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Mich., for 25 years as a physician. He has been the medical director of St. Peter’s Free Clinic in Hillsdale, Mich., since 2006.

Baker and his wife, Kathy, are the parents of four children and the grandparents of three grandchildren.
