Get up and Sing!

singing-girlCOLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (Feb. 2010) - The Peabody Public Library would like to present the First Annual Library Teen Idol Competition! This competition mimics the popular television show American Idol. The theme for this year’s competition is Get up and Sing!

The Library Teen Idol Competition will be open for all teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19.

To register for the competition, visit the children’s department, pick up your packet, and get signed up. All registration forms and paperwork must be completed and returned no later than March 15, 2010.

The first call out meeting will take place Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 5 p.m. at the Park Terrace office which is located at 10 Park Terrace Blvd, Columbia City.  All meetings and auditions will take place at the Park Terrace Office for this year’s competition.karaoke-microphone

The winner of the concert not only gets their name in the library’s newsletter but also will get their chance in the spotlight by performing in the Summer Sounds of the City, Summer Concert Series, presented by the Peabody Public Library.

Get your octaves in tune and your singing voice touched up and Get up and Sing!

Family Winter Reading Program – Register your family for this years Winter Reading Reading Wonderland. Each week one family will win a prize basket by reporting the amount of books the family has read that week. The Family Winter Reading program ends February 27.

Young Adult Winter Reading Program – Middle school and high school students will have their own Winter Reading Program this year. Each week they can register to win a prize basket by reporting the amount of books they have read that week. The Young Adult Winter Reading Program ends February 27.

 Winter Reading Begins January 17 – Register your family for this year’s Winter Reading “Reading Wonderland.” This year’s program will last six weeks and we will be giving away a different prize basket each week to one family who reports the amount of books they read.

Our Heroes' Tree - Wednesday, October 28 from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. As a way to honor friends and family members who have served in the military, we will be creating a heroes' tree. Children and adults are invited to bring in a picture of a friend or family member currently serving or who has served in any branch of the military and create an ornament to hang on our heroes' tree. We will also be collecting snack items to send to the troops. All ages welcome.

Halloween Fun - Saturday October 31 from 10 AM until 4:00 PM. Games, puzzles, crafts, and other fun stuff.

Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo will ‘Share Animals’ at Busco Library Aug. 4

CHURUBUSCO, Ind. – Don’t miss the excitement Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, when officials from the Fort Wayne’s Children Zoo will be present at the Churubusco Public Library to share several of their animals with visitors.

The event will take place at 10 a.m. at the library at 116 Mulberry Street, Churubusco.

There is still plenty of time to catch a summer library band concert.

The Dixielanders will perform at the library on Friday, Aug. 7, from 7-8 p.m. The concert is held rain or shine. If the weather is nice, visitors are asked to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on the lawn.

The Senophaxas will perform at the Churubusco Community Park during the Annual Chamber Picnic in the Park & Merchants vs Firemen Softball Game Saturday, Aug. 22 from 4-6 p.m.

The library’s summer concert series was made possible by a grant from the Whitley County Community Foundation.

  • Open Office – Tuesday, June 9, 2-4 p.m.  Learn the basics of Open Office,  a system of free, downloadable software. Use as a word processing  program, spreadsheet and more. Participants must be able to use the mouse.
  • Beginning Computers – Tuesday, June 16, 2-4 p.m. This is a class for the complete beginner. We will learn parts of the computer, how to use the mouse and some basic rules for computing and the Internet.
  • Basic Free E-mail, Tuesday, June 23, 2-4 p.m. Learn how to set up a free e-mail account, compose, send and read e-mails and some etiquette, some warnings and some fun. Must be able to use the mouse.
  • Buying and Selling on E-bay – Tuesday, June 30, 2-4 p.m. Learn the ins and outs of this

BUS TRIP TO THE INDIANA STATE LIBRARY – Wed., May 6, 7 a.m. Travel by bus to take a tour of the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Visit the Genealogy Center and take an architectural and materials tour. Cost is $30 per person. Registration is required.

BEADING CLASS – Wed., May 6, 6 p.m. Make a three-strand necklace using crimps to space groups of beads in what may appear as alibrarian random  patter along the strands of beading wire.  Pick up a supplies list, or purchase a kit – cost to be determined. Registration is required.

  • Joni Walker’s Art Classes meet on the second and fourth Thursday (April 9 and 23) at 4 p.m. Sign up at the Children’s Services Desk, call the Children’s Department, or register online. Fee is $2 per person per class to cover the cost of materials. Ages 5 and up. Limit: 30 students.

Peabody Public Library in Columbia City has announced the following programs for February.

Adult Programs

Needle Tatting – Mondays, Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, 5:30 p.m. Learn to create beautiful lace patterns using the needle technique. $11 fee for first time participants only. Registration is required.

Beading Class – Wednesday, Feb. 4, 6 p.m. This month’s project is a chain-of-hearts bracelet. Pick up a materials list at the circulation desk or purchase a kit for $10. Registration is required.

Genealogy for Beginners – Saturday, Feb. 7, 8 p.m. The Whitley County Genealogical Society will be showing how to begin tracing your roots. Registration is limited to 30, so call for availability.

BYOBeads – Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1-8 p.m. Get busy with other like minded crafters. It’s more fun with friends. Stop in any time between 1-8 p.m.

Doughy Valentine Art - make salt dough Valentines. Monday, February 9 at 4 p.m. for grades 1-3 and Wednesday, February 11 at 4 p.m. for grades 4-8. No fee, but sign-up requested.

Martial Arts/Karate Program is for ages 5 to 12 years old (attending with parent) on Monday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. The program will be presented by Dojo Director Kraig Schlosser, owner of the Shuri Ryu Karate Academy. He is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shuri Ryu Karate. He will be demonstrating basic karate techniques. Children attending should wear loose, comfortable clothing. No fee, but signup is requested.
