Busco plays tough, but falls to Fremont

Tags: , , ,

tennis_clip_artCHURUBUSCO, Ind. — Busco played tough, but still fell in tennis action April 15 against Fremont.

Kelli Klaehn played a lot tougher match than her 1-6 0-6 score indicated. Thre were a lot of eight to ten ball rallies, and deuce games.

According to tennis coach Ben Jagger, varsity player Morgan Young played her second, 3-set match of the year.

“It’s good to see a player with very little varsity experience stepping up to the challenge of a tough spot so early in the season,” Jagger said. “Mo can really grow into a great player. I’m looking forward to see what she can produce as the season progresses.”

Shannon Kuznar played another tough match though her score doesn’t indicate it. “She can hit the ball pretty well, but has a tough time coming up with the big shot when she needs it,” Jagger said.

Dodson and Holloway just didn’t show up to play, according to their coach.

”While watching their match, I felt that they really weren’t out-matched,” Jagger said. “They just didn’t seem to have the desire to win it. I was disappointed by their level of play. We’re going to try and see what they can do at the #2 doubles position against Columbia City. They way they are playing right now, our #2 dubs are the better team. It’s a heart-breaker because of the run they had to close the season last year gave me high expectations for this year’s season.”

Busco eagles Martinez and Shambaugh are really starting to learn how to play doubles together. And, it showed with their 6-2 6-0 win. They attacked the ball at the net, and kept it deep in the court from the baseline – not allowing their opponents too many free shots.

“I was very impressed with their level of play,” Jagger said. “They’re going to move into the #1 dubs spot against a very tough Columbia City team. I have already informed them that this match will test how good they really are.”

The JV team had quite a few girls playing in spots that they don’t normally play, but they responded favorably to the pressure. “We had pretty good play from almost all of the girls from the top to the bottom,” Jagger said.

Busco Varsity fell to Fremont, 1-4, and the JV, 5-6.

tennis_clip_art(Monday, April 12, 2010) –The Busco girls tennis team really showed up to play today in action against Northrop.

Shannon Kuznar dropped the jitters she had from her first match, and played a very tough two-set match. She kept her composure, and really hung in there for a match-deciding win over Popouski at the #3 spot.

Marla Martinez and Ali Shambaugh were starting to look like they could work together at the #2 doubles spot. They were never really down, but they played aggressive throughout the entire match.

Kelli Klaehn played another close one at #1 singles. She could have pulled it out if a couple of points would have went her way, but she stayed in the match all the way to the end eventually dropping it 4-6 4-6.

Dodson and Holloway played a tough three-setter. They played the first set like they were still sitting on the beaches of spring break. After they decided they were ready to play tennis, the took the next two sets in stride; winning 2-6 6-2 6-3.

JV had a few bright spots with Randi Murphy winning big at #1 singles; 6-2. The other two Busco JV wins came from #2 singles and #2 doubles with Alecia Harmon beating Tamarah Welch 6-2, and Shelby Bering and Felecia Young winning big at 6-0.

Busco Track enters conference season, gets facility upgrades

Although the Busco Men’s and Women’s Track teams already have three meets under their belts…the real season is just beginning.  On Tuesday April 13th, the NECC season begins as the men and women travel to Emma to face the Westview Warriors.  The teams will then host Lakeland and West Noble in an NECC three-way meet on Thursday April 15th

For the Busco Women (2-1, 0-0), the conference season couldn’t start with a more difficult opponent.  The Westview Women’s team is the defending NECC champion.  Busco sophomores Heather Monk, Rachel Fehring, and Alex Eyer will be the work horses for the girl’s squad.   Starting with Westview may be a lofty task, but Busco Head Track coach Zach Dock feels like this a great way for the women’s team to start the season.

“Westview is a quality track program.  They won the league last year, and they are the favorites to do it again this year.  We have a very young team.  This will be a great challenge for our girls.  We have a small team, but we’ve got talent.  It’s a good opportunity for us to see how they match-up against the league’s best.”

Track 5
Busco Sophomore Alex Eyer leads the Eagle’s distance unit with fellow sophomore Rachel Fehring.

The road for the Busco Men (3-0, 0-0) is not much easier.  The Lakeland men’s team shared the regular season conference title with Busco last season.  With the loss of senior hurdler Jordan Hamilton due to a fractured vertebra, Busco will need to rely on the likes of Kyle Monk, Josh LeFever, and Kyle Mathewson to score some major points to keep the Eagle’s title hopes alive.  Coach Dock expressed the importance for the Busco Men to come back from spring break in the right frame of mind.

“Opening up with Westview is always tough.  They are very solid in the jumps, the hurdles, and their middle distance and distance events.  We need to come back from break ready to work.  The competition in our league is very high, and our attitude could be the difference between starting 0-1 or 1-0 in the conference.   The key is not to look ahead.  Westview is extremely dangerous.   But, we know that we’ve got a tall order when we face Lakeland and West Noble.  They are both quality programs.  We shared the regular season NECC title with Lakeland last season, and we were able to edge them out in the NECC Meet to win the title.  Without question, this will be a very challenging week for our guys.”

There have also been some facility improvements around the Busco Track.  Last season, the school maintenance department added a gravel walk-way to the discus area.  The long jump pit also underwent a much-needed renovation.  This past week, the track staff edged the runways for the pole vault and the long jump to eliminate the grass that was creeping across the rubber.  The shot-put area had a tendency to hold water, so the athletic department purchased concrete to raise the shot-put pad and lumber to re-do the sector.  The pole vault box was loose, and the concrete surrounding it was beginning to crack break away.  The athletic department purchased a new pole vault box and the school corporation provided funds to have it installed and to have the concrete re-done.  The old box has been placed at the opposite end of the runway to use for drill work.  Coach Dock is very pleased with the new upgrades to the facilities.

“It is very important that we have facilities and equipment that not only allow our kids to succeed, but also keeps them safe.  We are making some upgrades around here that the athletes and the community can be proud of.  The athletic department and corporation have provided funds to make these things happen, and we’re very grateful.  J.R. Ford (Eagle Do It Best Hardware) gave us a great price on our lumber and delivered it to us.  And the Fairchild boys (H.O. Fairchild & Sons Concrete Construction) have been working through some lousy weather and doing high-quality work.  Everyone has been really great, and everyone around here appreciates it.”

Track 7
Busco Sophomore Alex Zolman makes an attempt into the recently renovated long jump pit while Junior Kyle Mathewson looks on.
Future improvements are also on the horizon.  The track and runways are scheduled to be re-surfaced this summer.  And, plans have also been discussed to create a paved staging area and 110m hurdle starting area.  Coach Dock believes that if the funds and manpower are available, these improvements will further enhance what has already been done at the track.

basketballs_1The Busco Boys basketball team won its 4th straight game and 3rd straight road game with a 65-56 victory Friday night over NECC foe, Fremont.  With the victory, Busco improves to 4-4 on the year and 2-2 in the NECC.  The 4 game win streak is the longest since a 4 game winning streak back in the 2005 season.

Leading the Eagles in scoring Friday night was junior Kyle Monk with a game-high 18 points.  Monk also grabbed 5 rebounds on the night.  Hunter Nicodemus added 12 points for the visiting Eagles, while Kyle Mathewson scored 9.

The Eagles seem to be finding their stride and have seemingly gained some momentum heading into the NECC tournament next week.  The Busco boys (4-4, 2-2) received a 1st round bye.  Therefore, they will be on the road Wednesday night against the winner of the Tuesday night match-up between the Prairie Heights Panthers (2-8, 0-5) and the Fairfield Falcons (6-2, 4-0).

The Churubusco Lady Eagles dropped a conference game to the Fremont Lady Eagles (10-2, 6-1) on Friday night by a final score of 54-32.  Leading the scoring for Churubusco was sophomore Haleigh Gross, who scored a game-high 17 points.

The Lady Eagles rebounded Saturday night with a 60-44 victory over the Hamilton Lady Marines.  The victory was the third for one of the season for the Lady Eagles (3-10, 1-6), and the first win in the NECC.  Like the boys, the Lady Eagles will face the winner of Prairie Heights (4-9, 3-5) and Fairfield (9-3, 6-1) on Wednesday night.
